Qatar Airways flight skids on wet runway in Kochi
QR516, a Cochin-bound Qatar Airways aircraft, landed ‘off-centred’ on the runway due to adverse weather conditions, reported NDTV.
Passengers of the Airbus A330, which damaged 12 runway lights in the incident, are all safe, said a Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) spokesperson.
Qatar Airways confirmed the incident, saying the plane skidded during ‘landing roll’ due to heavy rain and water on the runway at the Cochin airport, damaging a few runway lights, reported Gulf Times.
The aircraft taxied normally to a stand, the Doha-based carrier said in a statement on Twitter.
Due to the incident, the return flight from Kochi to Doha — QR517 — was cancelled. Qatar Airways added that all passengers were safe and accommodated on later flights.
“Qatar Airways is fully co-operating with local authorities. The safety and security of our passengers is our top priority,” the statement noted.
The incident happened at 0219 hours on Friday morning.
Two flights — a Dubai-bound FlyDubai and an Emirates’ flight for Kochi — were delayed due to the incident, which is being investigated by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
