A special concert entitled ‘A Dutch Musical Gift to Qatar’ will take place in the Atrium of the Museum of Islamic Art at 7pm on January 18, 2018.
World class musicians Kees Wieringa and Sonja Park will perform the Dutch musical masterpiece ‘Canto Ostinato’ on two grand pianos.
“I am excited about this concert. It is historic as it is the very first time that this Dutch iconic work will be played in Qatar and the wider region. It is offered as a Dutch musical gift to Qatar,” HE Dr Bahia Tahzib-Lie, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands said. ‘Canto Ostinato’ by composer Simeon ten Holt is the most famous Dutch work for piano of the 20th century and is one of the”classics” of minimal music.
The most remarkable aspect about this work is the amount of freedom that is given to the performer.”That makes this piece very interesting for me as a musician. Each performance of ‘Canto Ostinato’ is unique,” Park remarked.
The music can be repeated by the performers’ interpretation. Moreover, the performers determine the articulations, phrasing, dynamics and even the order in the piece. Improvisation and interaction will drive the concert.
Anyone having experienced the power of ‘Canto Ostinato’ will come under the spell of the hallucinatory effect of this iconic work. As a result, ‘Canto Ostinato’ is often described as ‘meditative’.”To me, ‘Canto Ostinato’ is the music of the future,” said Kees Wieringa. He has performed this musical piece numerous times all over the world and will now share his passion with the community in Qatar.
For Park it will be the first time performing this piece.”I am excited to see what kind of magic I am going to experience while performing!” she said.
The concert is supported by the Museum of Islamic Art, Fifty-One East and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
